The sport originated in the late 1980s in western Australia, where it was known as land-kiting. It was popularised in 1991 when Australian kitesurfer Ross Gardiner invented a new type of kite which he named "the parafoil". Kitesurfing has grown into an international sport with competitions taking place across the globe.

The birthplace of kitesurfing is Dahab, Egypt and Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt is the birthplace of kitesurfing. This sport, which combines aspects of both surfing and paragliding, was invented in Dahab in the early 1960s by a group of young locals. The word ‘kite’ is derived from the French word for bird, "oiseau", and it was one of these birds that gave people their first taste of flying as they tried.
