Having topped his group and achieved a new Olympic record, El-Gendy advanced to the final and ultimately claimed the gold medal.

His impressive performance continued with victories at the World Junior Championships in Portugal and the Under-21 Championship in the Czech Republic.

Tokyo 2020
In a historic achievement for Egypt, he claimed the silver medal in the modern pentathlon at the Tokyo Olympics.
With a score of 1482 points, he narrowly missed out on gold, finishing only five points behind the gold medalist, Britain’s Joseph Choong.
