Egypt’s Film Festival Society celebrates 50 years with awards, tributes, and resistance

Marking its Golden Jubilee under the theme “Long Live the Spirit of Resistance. Long Live Palestine,” the Film Society Festival for Egyptian Cinema, led by cinematographer Mahmoud Abdel Samie, has revealed the date for its closing ceremony.

The night promises to be a star-studded affair, featuring the much-anticipated award distribution for the best films of 2023.

The festival will also honor a distinguished group of filmmakers across various disciplines in recognition of their remarkable careers.

This year’s honorees include film distribution pioneer Antoine Zeind, composer Rageh Daoud, actress and producer Elham Shaheen, actor Ahmed Bedier, scriptwriter Atef Bishai, writer and critic Samir Gharib, and film critic Ahmed Shawqi.

The festival will also revive the “Those Who Passed Away” award category, which recognizes the contributions of departed film personalities.

This year’s honorees in this category include director Henri Barakat, artist Sayed Bedier, actress Hend Rostom and film historian Hassan Imam Omar.

This category, previously established in 2019, was discontinued last year. Its reinstatement signifies the festival’s continued commitment to preserving the legacies of those who shaped Egyptian cinema.
