EgyptAir releases statement in response to reports of “suffocation” incidents on flight to America

EgyptAir issued a statement on Friday clarifying the incident aboard flight MS987 bound for New Jersey. This follows a video that circulated on social media and news websites showing passengers experiencing difficulty breathing during the flight from Cairo to New Jersey.

EgyptAir stated the following in the statement:

  • “During the takeoff of EgyptAir flight MS987 from Cairo to New Jersey at 5:25 AM on September 18, one of the passengers felt unwell and extremely tired while the aircraft was taxiing on the ground. This was due to a sudden malfunction of the aircraft’s air conditioning system on the ground, causing a significant increase in cabin temperature. The cabin crew sought assistance from a medical doctor among the passengers, who confirmed that the passenger’s condition required medical attention. The crew immediately informed the captain, and for the passenger’s safety, the captain decided to return to the gate at 5:40 AM.”
  • “An ambulance was called to examine the passenger and assess their fitness to fly.”
  • “After providing first aid and asking the passenger if they wished to continue the journey, the passenger insisted on continuing the flight after receiving medical clearance.”
  • “After several attempts, the passengers were calmed down despite the high temperature inside the aircraft. The passenger’s health was reassessed and they were deemed fit to continue the journey. The flight then took off again for New Jersey at 7:10 AM on the same day.”
  • “EgyptAir is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the flight and apologizes for any inconvenience caused. The company reaffirms its commitment to the safety and comfort of its passengers, which is its top priority. EgyptAir is currently contacting the passengers to offer a suitable apology.”
